About The Rail Golf Course
The Rail is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. course built on what was a 240-acre dairy farm in Springfield. It has five lakes and 82 sand bunkers, so the round is more about where you put the ball than how far you hit it.
Its big claim is 31 years of LPGA golf. The tournament started here in 1976 as the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Golf Classic, and the course's owners paid for it alone for the first two years before a community nonprofit took it over in 1978. It ran as the Rail Charity Classic, then the State Farm Rail Classic, and stayed until 2006 before moving to Panther Creek in 2007. The event's scoring record, Cristie Kerr's 264 at 24 under, was set here in 2004.
It's a public course with a pro shop, lessons and a banquet space for weddings and outings. Soft spikes only, and no outside food or drink.
It's one of 4 courses in Springfield on Yoink, and Bunn Golf Course is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
