About Ingersoll Memorial Golf Course
Ingersoll is the Rockford Park District's wooded course on Daisyfield Road, 6,228 yards and par 71. It isn't long, but it's tight. The fairways are narrow and tree-lined, the ground rolls gently, and there's sand but no water anywhere on the course. It opened on September 2, 1922, the park district's second public course. The Ingersoll family gave the park in memory of their son, Lt. Clayton C. Ingersoll, who died in 1918 when his plane crashed during an Army Air Corps training exercise in France. Thomas Bendelow, who designed the country's first public course in New York City, laid it out, and Winthrop Ingersoll paid $5,000 for the brick clubhouse in 1924.
In 2001 Rockford was picked to host a Tiger Woods Foundation clinic here. In 2004 the district added Ingersoll Learning Links, a short four-hole course for kids, families and beginners. There's also a 12-station range, a 50-by-80-foot putting green and a restaurant.
