About Sandy Hollow Golf Course
Sandy Hollow opened on July 4, 1929, as the Rockford Park District's third public course, and it brought golf to the southeast side of town while taking pressure off the district's first two courses. Charles D. Wagstaff's Chicago firm designed it; the same firm designed Mauh-Nah-Tee-See Country Club and helped redesign Rockford Country Club.
It's 18 tree-lined holes, par 71 and only 6,107 yards, so it's a course for hitting fairways more than for bombing it. The district describes sand traps and swales, and when it opened it had the first water hazard on any park district course.
The thing people remember is the clubhouse: slate roof, brick, built in 1931, and now mostly covered in ivy, with gardens and flower baskets around it. There's a golf shop and restaurant inside, and the course runs leagues.
