Ted Makalena Golf Course

Honolulu's flat city course on a peninsula into Pearl Harbor, named for the first Hawaiian-born winner of the Hawaiian Open. Short, at 5,976 yards.

About Ted Makalena Golf Course

Ted Makalena is one of Honolulu's six city courses, and the city describes it plainly: flat, with sparse fairways, in Waipahu on a peninsula that runs into Pearl Harbor. It's short, 5,976 yards and par 71 from the men's tees (67.9 rating, 110 slope), and par 73 at 5,551 yards for women, so it plays quickly. The map survey adds texture: 13 tree-lined holes, water on 3, and about 72 bunkers. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

The name matters here. Ted Makalena started caddying at 8 and won the 1966 Hawaiian Open over Billy Casper and Gay Brewer, the first Hawaiian-born player to win it. Two years later he died at 34 after a swimming accident in Waikiki, and this course was named for him. Go Oahu dates the course to 1971 and credits the father-and-son design team of Bob E. and Robert L. Baldock.

Keep expectations simple. The city lists no pro shop, the restaurant and snack bar are vacant for now, and there's no twilight play until further notice. It's 15 miles from downtown Honolulu, about 40 minutes from Waikiki.

It's one of 2 courses in Waipahu on Yoink, and Waikele Country Club is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.

What it's like to play Ted Makalena Golf Course

There's real elevation change: some holes rise or fall about 54 feet from tee to green. There are about 72 bunkers out there, well above average, so a good bunker game pays.
