Waikoloa Golf Club - Beach Course

Robert Trent Jones Jr. built it in 1981 on lava by the Pacific; now a par-35 nine whose sixth runs between black lava fields down to the ocean.

About Waikoloa Golf Club - Beach Course

This is the Beach Nine at Waikoloa Beach Resort, on the lava coast of the Kohala side of the Big Island. The resort's golf is now 27 holes: the Beach, Lakes and Kings' nines, and you play any two of them as an 18-hole round (or all three in a day). The Beach Nine is par 35 and 3,281 yards. The landing areas are generous and the greens are big, with low-lipped bunkers, so you can play it safe or go after birdies.

The hole to know is the sixth, a par 5 on a strip of fairway between black lava fields that runs down to the ocean, then turns hard left to a green ringed by palms with the surf behind it.

Robert Trent Jones Jr. opened the first version of the Beach Course in 1981 as an 18-hole, par-70 layout. He has said they built it around two kinds of lava: the older brown a'a, which crumbled and could be shaped, and the newer black pahoehoe, which had to be covered. The par-5 seventh on that original course was named Hemolele, Hawaiian for perfection. The resort's courses were later reshuffled into the three nines you play today.
