Hapuna Golf Course

Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay's 1992 links-style layout climbs from sea level to 750 feet on the Kohala Coast, with the ocean in view from every hole.

About Hapuna Golf Course

Hapuna is the second course at Mauna Kea Resort, sitting up the hill from The Westin Hapuna Beach Resort. Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay built it as a links-style course, and it opened in 1992. The big thing to know is the climb: the course goes from sea level to 750 feet, and the resort says you get Kohala Coast ocean views from every hole.

It measures just under 6,900 yards from the back, so length isn't the whole story; the elevation changes are. The greens are seashore paspalum and the tees, fairways and rough are Tifway 419 Bermuda, and the course recently reopened after work on its greens and fairways. Every cart has GPS, which helps when uphill and downhill shots throw off your usual numbers.

The resort says it's a favorite with visitors and kama‘aina alike. Practice balls and bottled water come with the round, a beverage cart works the course, and the pro shop runs lessons and clinics with PGA professionals. There's a dress code: collared shirts, no denim or athletic shorts.

It's one of 12 courses Yoink watches in the Big Island area, and the closest alternative is The Village Course at Waikoloa, about 5 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.

What it's like to play Hapuna Golf Course

There's real elevation change: some holes rise or fall about 107 feet from tee to green. There are about 101 bunkers out there, well above average, so a good bunker game pays. 15 of the 18 holes bend, so position off the tee matters more than length.
