The Creek Golf Course at Hard Labor State Park

Narrow tree-lined fairways in the Hard Labor Creek woods, Rocky Creek in play and a water wheel on the 14th. A Golf Digest Frugal Golfer value pick, 2010.

About The Creek Golf Course at Hard Labor State Park

The Creek is the golf course inside Hard Labor Creek State Park, a big wooded Piedmont park off I-20 between Madison and Covington whose lakes and camps were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. The name is thought to come either from enslaved people who worked the fields here or from American Indians who found the creek hard to cross.

Don't let the state-park price fool you. It's par 72 and 6,612 yards, but the fairways are narrow and lined with trees, and at 71.5 and a 133 slope it plays harder than the yardage says. Rocky Creek supplies a lot of the water, and the 14th is the one people remember for the water wheel. The greens are Champion Bermuda, and there are 39 bunkers.

Value is the reputation. Golf Digest's Frugal Golfer named it the 4th sweetest deal in the USA in 2010, and the state still calls it one of Georgia's best golf values. There's a range and a pro shop, and weekly games include the Men's Dogfights on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
