About Cypress Creek Golf Club

Cypress Creek opened in 1989, a Dean Refram and Steve Smyers design with Smyers, the minimalist, leading. He routed it around what the land had, and the land is unusual for Florida: a 604-acre cypress preserve with some real undulation. Homes only come into play on four or five holes, so most of the round is you and the woods. The club says players walk off 18 saying it feels like North Carolina.

It's a tough par 72. Water touches 14 holes, and the staff say plenty of people restock balls at the turn. There's no gentle start: the 2nd is 432 yards uphill, usually into the wind, with water all the way down the right. The 13th is the club's showpiece, 160 yards over water to a postage-stamp green, and the par-5 14th has been called one of the best driving holes in Tampa Bay. From the back it's rated 73 with a 134 slope, and there are six sets of tees. The staff say a lot of people start at the back and move up, so pick honestly.

The greens were redone in 2016 with Champion Bermuda, so there's no winter overseeding. The club is owned and run by PGA professionals, and the grill and bar are open to the public.

It's one of 2 courses in Ruskin on Yoink, and Freedom Fairways Golf Course is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
