Crane Creek Reserve Golf Course

President Harding skipped lunch to play the old nine twice in 1923. Donald Ross's 18 opened in 1928, and the Crane Creek canal runs through it.

About Crane Creek Reserve Golf Course

Crane Creek Reserve is the City of Melbourne's course, and it has more history than its short card suggests. The Melbourne Golf and Country Club started in 1920 with six holes laid out by M.K.V. Davis, soon nine. President Warren G. Harding skipped a luncheon in 1923 to play it, liked it enough to go around again, and had club members caddie for him. In 1925 the club voted without dissent to hire Donald Ross for a full 18, with William H. Diddle running construction, and it opened in December 1928.

It stayed Ross's course until the late 1970s, when the city brought in William Amick for a major renovation; after a year closed it reopened on February 15, 1978, with a new clubhouse and new holes. The city renamed it Crane Creek Reserve in 2007, and it's on the Florida Historic Golf Trail.

Today it's a par 71 with four sets of tees from about 4,600 to 5,800 yards, so it's a course for hitting irons and wedges well rather than bombing driver. The Crane Creek canal runs through the property, and by OpenStreetMap survey water is in play on 15 of the 18 holes. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

The canal has its own story. In 1922 a local man found human remains dated to 10,000 to 8,000 BC beside mammoth bones on its banks. The skull became known as Melbourne Man, and one of the mammoth skeletons is now at Amherst College, which made it the school mascot in 2017.
