About Fort Myers Country Club
The Fort is the City of Fort Myers' Donald Ross course, on palm-lined McGregor Boulevard about a mile from the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. Ross drew it in 1916, his longtime associate James B. McGovern oversaw the build, and it opened in December 1917. It's one of the oldest courses on Florida's west coast. You can walk any time of day, every day of the year, and houses rarely come into play.
The canal is part of the strategy. On the par-4 3rd it runs diagonally across the hole, and a 1918 newspaper wrote that a player who didn't carry it at least 160 yards off the tee wouldn't reach the green in two. Steve Smyers renovated the course for the city in 2014, only the second big renovation since it opened, and said he designed it as if Donald Ross were coming back to build on the same site today. The history runs deep. The city bought the course in 1927 for $165,000. Thomas Edison and Henry Ford played it often in the 1920s, and in 1930 Mina Edison played her first round here: she whiffed her first swing and shot 99 for nine, then ordered a new set of clubs. In 1942 it hosted the 4th Senior PGA Championship, which Eddie Williams won at six under.
