About Bay Point - Nicklaus Course
Bay Point's Nicklaus Course started as Bruce Devlin's Lagoon Legends in 1986 and was renovated by Nicklaus Design in 2005; the club says it's the only Nicklaus Design course in Northwest Florida. It's a par 72 of a little over 7,000 yards from the back, rated 74.5 with a 137 slope, and five sets of tees run from 4,100 to nearly 7,100 yards, so pick carefully. The ground is scrub oak, pine and saltwater marsh along St. Andrew's Bay, with a marshland wildlife sanctuary next door.
The hole everyone talks about is the fifth: a tee shot to an island fairway in the middle of the Grand Lagoon, then a second to a peninsula green looking out over St. Andrews Bay. Tee shots left of the penalty area there play as out of bounds, so aim at the island. The course hosted U.S. Open local qualifying in 2016 and 2021. In summer 2018 the greens were rebuilt with TifEagle Bermuda and every greenside bunker was redone, and it reopened on October 8, 2018.
