About Black Canyon Golf Course
Black Canyon is Montrose's oldest course, and it plays like two different ones. The par-34 front nine, opened in 1959, is Joe Francese's park-style layout, lined with trees. The par-36 back nine is Byron Coker's links-style side, with deeper bunkers and longer fairways. From the longest tees it's 6,174 yards with a 68.3 rating and 122 slope, so it's more about placement than power.
The two nines came together in pieces. In 1986 the city was given the land next to the old Black Canyon Golf Club, built the back nine on it and leased it to the club's operators, which made Black Canyon the town's first 18 until Cobble Creek opened in 1999. When the owner, Montrose Land Company, defaulted on its loans, the city council voted in January 2014 to bid $635,000 for the front nine, its land and the naming rights, and the city runs the course today.
It's set up for families: kids 13 and under play free with a paying adult, and seniors get a discount from 60. There's a golf simulator, men's, senior and ladies' clubs, and the newly renovated Rusty Putter restaurant. You can't bring your own cooler, but rental carts come with a small one and there's a beverage cart.
