Lakota Links Golf Course

James Engh built it in 2004 below the Flat Tops, with canyon views and tee shots that sometimes drop 100 feet to the fairway.

About Lakota Links Golf Course

Lakota Links opened in May 2004 as Lakota Canyon Ranch Golf Club, a James Engh design in New Castle, just off I-70 below the Flat Tops Wilderness. It's 7,111 yards from the back, and the thing people remember is the drop: some tees sit high enough that the ball falls 100 feet to the fairway, with the Western Slope canyons all around.

The map survey adds texture: about 210 feet between the high and low points, water on eight holes (one forced carry), 11 doglegs, seven of them turning left, and only 31 bunkers. The survey marks none of the holes as tree-lined. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

The Romero Group now owns and runs it, having bought the club and the leftover development land out from under the previous owner's bankruptcy. The course is open about nine months a year, and the Lookout Bar and Grill is on site.

It's one of 23 courses Yoink watches in the Colorado Mountains area, and the closest alternative is Glenwood Springs Golf Club, about 11 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.

What it's like to play Lakota Links Golf Course

There's real elevation change: some holes rise or fall about 210 feet from tee to green. 11 of the 18 holes bend, so position off the tee matters more than length.
