Flatirons Golf Course

Willie Tucker drew it for the Boulder Country Club and the WPA built it in 1938. It went through six names before the city took it over in 1986.

About Flatirons Golf Course

Flatirons is Boulder's city course at 57th and Arapahoe, and it's busy: more than 50,000 rounds a year and over a million since the city started running it in 1986. It's par 70 and 6,782 yards from the back tees, down to 5,226 from the front. The city lists walking fees, carts can't be reserved, and they're capped at two per tee time, so come ready to walk.

The course goes back further than the name. Golf in Boulder started in 1914 on a nine-hole, sand-green track at Chautauqua Park. In 1933 the Boulder Country Club commissioned a new design at 57th and Arapahoe from Willie Tucker, an English pro who went on to design more than 100 U.S. courses, and it was built in 1938 with Works Progress Administration help. It opened as the Boulder Municipal Sports Center and has also been the Boulder Golf Club, the Country Club Golf Course, the Boulder Country Club, the University Club and Flatirons Country Club before settling on Flatirons Golf Course in 1986.

Local golfer George Hoos, who caddied there during World War II, remembered what's now the front nine being fenced off and closed so cattle could graze for the war effort. These days it's a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, first certified in 2010 and recertified about every three years since. There's a range, chipping area and putting green, and the Ironwood Bar and Grille.

It's one of 26 courses Yoink watches in the Boulder & Northern Colorado area, and the closest alternative is Indian Peaks Golf Course, about 5 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
