About Coal Creek Golf Course

Coal Creek is Louisville's city course, and it plays like two courses. Dick Phelps designed it with a links-style front nine where water is in play on nearly every hole, and a back nine built on elevation change with wide-open Rocky Mountain views. The course calls itself walkable, and it's run to a 4-hour-30 pace. From the TNT tips it rates 72.5 with a 136 slope, and the Pick and Shovel tees drop that to 69.8 and 125.

It opened in 1990 as one of the first high-end public courses on the Front Range. In September 2013 the creek it's named for jumped its banks and nearly destroyed it. The city had already had Herfort Norby draw up a master plan, so it hired Norby and Landscapes Unlimited to rebuild from scratch, combining about $3 million in FEMA-eligible flood repairs with $2.5 million in planned improvements. It reopened in summer 2015 with new irrigation and bigger practice areas, billed as Colorado's newest 25-year-old golf course.

Then came the Marshall Fire on December 30, 2021. The course itself was largely spared, but the land along the first five holes changed, and 159 burned trees came out. Colorado AvidGolfer's 2020 Caggy Awards named it Best Value and Most Underrated Course, and in 2025 it became a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.
