McCloud Golf Club

Built in 1923 for lumber company directors on donated pasture below Mount Shasta. Squaw Creek runs through it, and the members have owned it since 1993.

About McCloud Golf Club

McCloud is a member-owned nine a mile south of the old lumber town, open to the public, with Mount Shasta (14,180 feet) filling the view. It's a regulation-length par 36 with four sets of tees, and separate tees on the second loop turn it into an 18-hole round. Squaw Creek and runoff from springs run through the property, and a pond went in beside the 7th fairway in 2006, so there's more water in play than you'd expect on a mountain pasture. You can walk it, and push carts are free under the clubhouse deck when the shop is closed.

The McCloud River Lumber Company built it in 1923 on land donated by the Hearst family, for board members who came out from Minneapolis for meetings. Horse teams and highwheelers did the work, the pasture grass became the fairways, and the greens were lightly oiled sand. In 1935 the town's residents were let in and the greens went to grass, and a few years later people from surrounding towns could play too. Tees and greens were hand-watered at night until 1965; automatic sprinklers were in by 1968. When the lumber company sold its land in 1993, the members bought the course.
