About PGA West - Pete Dye Stadium Course
The Stadium Course is Pete Dye's desert follow-up to TPC Sawgrass, and the resort lists it at 7,300 yards with a 76.1 rating and 150 slope, the stiffest numbers at PGA WEST. Golf Digest ranked it the 4th toughest course in America in 2007, and GOLF Magazine put it on its Top 100 Courses to play list for 2016-2017. Five sets of tees help. The name comes from Dye shaping spectator seating into the ground around the holes.
The finish is the famous part: the island-green 17th, called Alcatraz, then the water-lined 18th. Lee Trevino made a hole-in-one on 17 at the 1987 Skins Game, which was played here from 1986 to 1991, and it won him a carry-over skin worth $175,000.
It was too much for the tour. The Stadium joined the Bob Hope rotation in 1987, and the pros signed a petition that kept it out from 1988 until it came back into what is now The American Express in 2016. It has also hosted six Q-School finals. Starting in the summer of 2020, Tim Liddy, who worked with Dye for nearly 30 years, led a restoration that pushed the greens back to their original size and rebuilt the greenside bunkers to Dye's plans.
