About Timberline Golf Club

Timberline is Jerry Pate's course in Calera, minutes from Birmingham, opened in 2002. Pate, the former U.S. Open champion, says of the site, "We just tore the whole thing up and started over!" What he built rolls gently up and down under tall pines, big oaks and hardwoods, which is where the name comes from. For a course that young, it feels older than it is.

It's a par 71 with four sets of tees, 4,808 to 6,745 yards. Golfweek ranked it ninth on its 2010 list of Alabama's Top 10 Courses You Can Play, then eighth every year from 2011 through 2015. Pate's design firm talks about giving players choices of route rather than forcing one shot, so there's usually a safer line if you look for it.

In winter the fairways go dormant while the tees are overseeded, and the course aerifies in spring and early fall, so check before you go in those windows. The range runs on TrackMan.

It's one of 31 courses Yoink watches in the Alabama — Birmingham to Montgomery area, and the closest alternative is Ballantrae Golf Club, about 13 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
