About FarmLinks at Pursell Farms
FarmLinks is the golf course at Pursell Farms, a family-owned resort on 3,500 acres outside Sylacauga, southeast of Birmingham. Dr. Michael Hurdzan and Dana Fry designed it on farmland the Pursells have held for three generations, and it opened in 2003. It isn't flat farm golf: the course itself leads with its dramatic elevation changes.
The farm is all over the card. The 4th is the lower 40, the long field every farm has, and it's the No. 1 handicap hole. One par 5 plays off the tee past Lake Christine, named for David Pursell's mother. One long downhill par 3 was modeled on a hole at Black Diamond Ranch in Florida. The 14th is the flattest hole on the course, with Pennywinkle Creek in the trees on the left, and the closing hole runs past Hamilton Place, a farmhouse built before the Civil War. Another hole is named for Hernando de Soto, whose expedition is believed to have wintered in these woods in 1540.
It started life partly as a showcase for turf science: in 2013 the resort called it the world's only research and demonstration golf course, and more than 10,000 superintendents and turf specialists had come to see it. In 2011 and again in 2013, Golfweek's America's Best Courses You Can Play list ranked it the top public course in Alabama, and in 2011 Golf Digest put Pursell Farms at 39th on its 75 Best Golf Resorts in North America.
