About Highland Park Golf Course
Highland Park is where golf in Alabama starts. It opened in 1903 as the Country Club of Birmingham, with Nick Thompson laying out the 18 holes, and it is the oldest course in the state. A 14-year-old Bobby Jones won the Birmingham Country Club Invitational here, one of his first wins. In 1927 the course opened to the public, and the land is still owned by the City of Birmingham.
Don’t let the card fool you. It is par 70 and a little over 5,800 yards from the back, but the fairways are short, narrow and rolling, every hole has some elevation change, and a lot of approaches play uphill. Creeks wind through it, there are a few lakes, and the greens are well bunkered. You get views of the downtown skyline and the old houses of the Highland Park neighborhood, and it is only blocks from Lakeview and Five Points South.
The course is named for Charley Boswell, a Birmingham native blinded in World War II who went on to win 17 national blind golf championships; his plaque sits on the first tee. Developer Bob Barrett and architect Bob Cupp restored the course in 1998, and a seven-month renovation in 2019 rebuilt the bunkers and put in AU Victory bentgrass greens. GOLF Magazine named it to its 30 Best Municipal Golf Courses in America list in 2021, and Troon named it its Facility of the Year for the East in 2025.

What it's like to play Highland Park Golf Course
There are about 89 bunkers out there, well above average, so a good bunker game pays. Water is in play on 12 of the 18 holes, and you carry it on 10 of them, so bring a few extra balls. 11 of the 18 holes bend, so position off the tee matters more than length.
