About Three Crowns Golf Club
Three Crowns sits on the old Amoco refinery on the west side of town, now called Platte River Commons. Midwest Refining started running the refinery there in 1913, it made fuel oil, toluene and aviation fuel for the military from 1941, and at its peak it processed 48,000 barrels with about 750 workers. It shut in 1991. After a 1998 cleanup agreement with the state, the site was dug out, capped with fill and topped with sand, and the course opened in 2005.
The cleanup is still part of the round. About 120 recovery wells pump groundwater from under the course and along a barrier wall, and the oil and chemicals are filtered out through a chain of wetlands. Those wetlands are the water hazards you're playing around, along with eight lakes and 61 bunkers.
Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed it, and Bruce Charlton of his firm built it. From the back it's 7,065 yards, with Black, Gold, White and Red tees, bentgrass greens and bluegrass everywhere else, and 45 acres of native grass around 110 acres of turf. The map survey shows water near 15 holes, forced carries on about nine, no holes lined with trees and only about 40 feet of elevation change, so expect it open and exposed. There's a 13-acre practice facility with a 300-yard range, and The Refinery restaurant is open to everyone.
