Trout Lake Golf & Country Club

The Northwoods' oldest 18, since 1924: cedar, birch and fir, small elevated greens, the Trout River across the 1st and 18th, and a Paul Albanese facelift.

About Trout Lake Golf & Country Club

Trout Lake was built in 1924 on old logging company land in Vilas County, with the back nine finished in 1926, and the club calls it the oldest 18-hole facility in the Northwoods. You play through stands of white cedar, birch and balsam fir. It's known for poa fairways and small, elevated greens. The Trout River flows out of the lake, across Highway 51 and through the course, but it only really comes into play on the 1st and 18th, where you have to carry it off the tee.

For its 100th anniversary the course got a facelift overseen by architect Paul Albanese: new tees on every hole, a couple of severe doglegs softened, five new green complexes, work on the other 13 green surrounds, and Pinehurst-style runoffs and collection areas where thick ryegrass rough used to be. The club says the work was finished before the 2025 season opened.

The clubhouse is an original 1880s logging home, remodeled with a fireplace and a screened porch that looks over the 18th fairway. The practice area is big for a northern course: 325 yards of range, a 7,000-square-foot putting and chipping green and a 3,500-square-foot bunker and chipping green.

It's one of 29 courses Yoink watches in the Wisconsin Northwoods area, and the closest alternative is St. Germain Golf Club, about 7 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
