Peninsula State Park Golf Course

Cut through cedar and maple woods above Eagle Harbor in the 1920s and '30s, and one 69-yard hole drops straight down a 50-foot cliff.

About Peninsula State Park Golf Course

This is the only golf course inside a Wisconsin state park, and it plays like one: fairways framed by white cedar, oak, beech and maple, views across Eagle Harbor to the village of Ephraim, and glimpses of the Niagara Escarpment along the way. Park wildlife wanders across. The hole people remember is a 69-yarder the DNR describes as a drive straight down a 50-foot cliff.

It grew in stages. There were nine holes with sand-and-oil greens by 1923 and a full 18 of about 5,000 yards by 1931. The first clubhouse was a granary, replaced in 1954, and a 1960s redesign dropped a hole that crossed Highway 42. Along the 9th fairway, a stone circle marks where a 40-foot Memorial Pole honoring the Potawatomi Nation once stood, and nearby is the grave of Chief Kahquados, the last chief of the Potawatomi. The bear that sat on top of the pole is now the course logo.

By the 1960s and '70s the course was open but in poor shape. In 1981 a group of locals talked Governor Lee Dreyfus and the DNR into letting them run it, and since 1982 the nonprofit Peninsula Golf Associates has managed it on a lease from the state. They added a six-hole par-3 short course in 2014, with holes from 60 to 120 yards on natural grass tees.
