About Alpine Resort And Golf Course
The Legacy Nine is what the Alpine plays today: a short, tree-lined loop built around two raised tees, the 6th and the 9th. The 9th is the one people remember. The fairway falls away off the bluff and you hit with Egg Harbor and the bay spread out below you. In the fall the trees turn and the whole walk is color.
Brothers John and Paul Bertschinger developed the Alpine in 1921 and opened it to guests in 1922, the first tourism business in Egg Harbor. Golf grew in pieces, with new nines added in 1948, 1976 and 2002. At its peak there were 36 holes, later 27, and for years an electric tram hauled golfers from the lower holes to the top of the bluff for a quarter.
The family ran it for a century. It sat closed in 2020, and in 2021 a new owner bought it with plans to reopen it and keep its old-resort feel. The golf clubhouse now has guest rooms upstairs that look out over the course.
