About Winagamie Golf Course
Winagamie has 27 holes on 200 acres on the west side of the Fox River Valley, with few homes and no highways around it. The Pines is the original, from 1962: a traditional layout on rolling ground lined with hundreds of mature evergreens. The Woodlands opened in 2001 with many holes cut through the woods, plus wildflowers, wetlands, a lot of bunkers and big, undulating greens. The Highlands, added the same year, is the family course, and kids learn on the TWIGS course.
The story is Mary Beth Nienhaus. She was Marquette's first female student-athlete, joining the men's golf team in 1965, and she was named LPGA Coach of the Year in 1987, the only high school coach ever to win it. She became a partner in Winagamie about ten years after it opened and took sole ownership in 1993. On the last day of 2013 she gave the business to the Appleton Education Foundation, and local students now learn turf and event management at the course. Since 2017 it has been working toward Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary certification; look for the wildflowers along the drive on 10.
