Reid Golf Course

Appleton's city course since Labor Day 1928; a newspaper heiress's will paid for the back nine, and J.P. Hayes won the city title here at 18.

About Reid Golf Course

Reid is Appleton's municipal course, and it has the feel the course itself describes: a manicured, park-style layout where the price is fair and you can go low if you're playing well. The ratings back that up; from the White tees it's a 69.2 with a 117 slope, and the Gold and Red tees play shorter still. OpenStreetMap survey data shows water near seven holes, trees along 13 and 36 bunkers, so it isn't all wide open. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

The city opened it on Labor Day 1928 as nine holes laid out by local golfers. The back nine came from Estelle Reid, daughter of Appleton Post owner and editor Thomas Reid. In August 1940 a judge let the city spend $10,000 from her will on the course, the Park Board bought 52 acres the next month, and the second nine opened in April 1941. It was dedicated as an 18-hole course on July 23, 1941, and renamed for her in the 1950s. The plaque from the first hole now sits above the clubhouse fireplace.

That stone clubhouse dates to July 30, 1950, and was gutted and remodeled in 1995. The Appleton City Golf Tournament has been played here every June since 1946. Its best-known champion is J.P. Hayes, who won the city title and the Fox Cities Amateur here in 1984 at 18, then went on to beat Jim Furyk in a playoff at the 1998 Buick Westchester Classic and win the John Deere Classic four years later.
