About Palmer Golf Course – Speidel (at Oglebay Resort)
The Palmer is the newer of the two big 18s at Oglebay's Speidel Golf Club, in the hills outside Wheeling about 60 miles from Pittsburgh. It opened roughly three decades after the 1969 Robert Trent Jones course next door. It's a par 71 with an unusual mix: six par 3s, seven par 4s and five par 5s. It plays 6,800 yards from the back tees down to 4,200 from the front, and Palmer worked with the existing hills, adding bunkers, mounding and generous greens.
The resort calls it the more playable of the two big designs, so it's the pick if the Jones sounds like too much. Golfer's Choice voted it the No. 1 golf layout in the nation and the No. 2 course in West Virginia in 2023.
It's one of 2 courses in Wheeling on Yoink, and Jones Golf Course – Speidel (at Oglebay Resort) is practically next door — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
