Rock Creek Golf Course

William Flynn's 1923 course deep in the woods, opened with President Harding there. The flat front nine is open while the hilly back nine waits.

About Rock Creek Golf Course

Rock Creek is Washington's second public course and the most secluded of the three that National Links Trust runs: it sits deep in the woods of Rock Creek Park, and the trees block out the city entirely. William Flynn, who later did Shinnecock Hills, routed the first nine on old farmland, and President Warren G. Harding was there when it opened on May 23, 1923. Flynn's full 18 opened on April 3, 1926. The course is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

What you can play right now is the front nine, which is mostly flat and open, with short par 4s and long par 3s. Go around twice for 18 at 4,961 yards. The back nine is closed. It's the hilly, narrow half, and by the time National Links Trust took over in October 2020 it was completely overgrown. You can still book a five-hole loop on holes 10, 11, 15, 17 and 18. There's a free putting green and a snack bar with the basics, including beer, but no range.

The course has had a rough stretch. Widening Military Road between 1946 and 1958 cost three holes, which William F. Gordon rebuilt, and in 1997 neighbors fought off a plan to close it. National Links Trust now holds a 50-year lease from the Park Service and plans a new clubhouse, a 50-bay Toptracer range, a Himalayas-style putting course, nine restored regulation holes and a nine-hole par 3 by Hanse Golf Course Design. The project was paused as of May 2026 and is set to resume with the Park Service.
