East Potomac Golf Links - Blue

Walter Travis's reversible links-style 18 from the early 1920s, the Washington Monument in view from every hole. Hosted the 1923 U.S. Amateur Public Links.

About East Potomac Golf Links - Blue

Walter Travis laid out East Potomac's original 18 on the East Potomac Park peninsula in the early 1920s, with the Old Course at St Andrews in mind. National Links Trust says he made it reversible, so the course could run either way and spread out the wear from the crowds. The first nine opened on March 15, 1921, and President Warren G. Harding was one of the first to play it. The Blue Course is the full 18 today, par 72 at 6,599 yards, and it hosted the U.S. Amateur Public Links in 1923.

The course calls it a links-style layout and the toughest of its three, and the views are the draw. The Washington Monument is in sight from anywhere on the course, and you'll also pick out the Jefferson Memorial, Fort McNair and Reagan National Airport. It's the busiest of the city's three public courses, so expect company.

The history isn't all proud. Like almost every D.C. course, it was segregated. Black golfers who tried to play in 1941 had stones thrown at them, and it wasn't until the city's courses were desegregated in 1955 that they could play without trouble. National Links Trust took over under a 2020 agreement with the National Park Service, but the administration ended that lease at the end of 2025. In May 2026 President Trump proposed turning the public course into an 18-hole professional course, so check who runs it and what's open before you go.
