A 1920s course on Navy land at Sewell's Point, run by Navy MWR and open to civilians since 2018. Par 71, about 6,280 yards, Champion Bermuda greens.

About Sewell's Point Golf Course

Sewells Point sits on federal land at Naval Station Norfolk but outside the base fence line, and it's run by Navy MWR. For most of its life it was for military golfers only. With play down to about 30,000 rounds a year, the Navy opened it to the public in 2018, and today the course says plainly that it's open to everyone.

It's a par 71 of roughly 6,280 yards, so length isn't the test. The map survey shows no hole rising or falling more than about 8 feet from tee to green, trees along 13 holes, 43 bunkers, water on 4 holes and only 5 doglegs, 4 of them to the right: a level, straightforward round where the bunkers and tree lines do the defending. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data. The greens are Champion hybrid Bermuda.

The Navy calls it a Donald Ross design established in 1927. Not everyone agrees: some architecture listings credit William Flynn instead, from its days as the Norfolk Country Club course, and nobody has published the original drawings to settle it.

It's one of 22 courses in Virginia Beach on Yoink, and the closest alternative is Ocean View Golf Course, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
