About Birdwood Golf Course
Birdwood is the golf course at Boar's Head Resort, which the University of Virginia Foundation owns, and it's the home course for UVA's men's and women's teams. The university bought the land in 1974 (the hills were part of a 1739 land patent, one of the earliest in the colony) and had Lindsay Ervin build the first course in 1984.
What you play now is Davis Love III and Love Golf Design's complete redesign, which opened in 2020. They pushed nine new holes onto 50 acres that hadn't been used before, reused five old corridors and rerouted four, and threaded the round past the historic Birdwood Mansion; the 17th is one of three signature holes around it. The new ground opened up views of the Blue Ridge. It's par 71 on six sets of tees, from 3,856 up to 7,116 yards, with zoysia fairways, bentgrass greens and fine-fescue native areas that give it a links look.
The extras are worth the time. The Nest is a six-hole approach course, 61 to 135 yards a hole, that you can play in under an hour, and Ridges is an 18-hole putting course of about 31,000 square feet behind the clubhouse, shaped after the mountains. Putting there is free if you buy something at the Birdwood Bar and Grill.
It's one of 14 courses Yoink watches in the Shenandoah Valley & Charlottesville area, and the closest alternative is Meadowcreek Golf Course, about 7 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
