About Independence Golf Club

Independence opened in 2001 as Tom Fazio's first public course in Virginia. Starting in the fall of 2013 it got a full makeover led by Lester George, working with Virginia amateur great Vinny Giles: new grass on the fairways, Champion Bermuda greens, a lot of bunkers taken out and trees cut back where they crowded play. Golf Digest put it on its Top 10 Remodels of 2016.

The result plays more like an old-style course around the greens. Closely mown chipping areas mean you can putt, chip or run the ball on, and the club says rounds now take almost an hour less. It's a par 72 with five sets of tees, starting just over 5,000 yards. The map survey counts water on five holes, and most of the doglegs bend left.
