About The Hideout Golf Club
The Hideout is Bill Johnston's course on the shore of 7,500-acre Lake Brownwood, open since 2008 and par 72. It's hill-country golf in a part of Texas where courses are mostly flat, so expect some lies with the ball above your feet. Creeks wander through, big oaks frame the holes, and Johnston left the natural rock where he found it.
A few holes stick with people. The one the club calls its signature is a par 3 of 224 yards from the tips, with a pond waiting to the right and a bunker left as the only bailout. On the 565-yard par 5, giant oaks stand in the fairway and split it into two routes along the creek. Johnston likes to finish each nine with a par 5 you can get home in two, so save something for the end.
The land has some history showing. One valley on the course used to be a farmed field, and when the course was first built a railroad caboose served as the rest station. It's a full resort, with lodge rooms looking over the course and the lake, cabins and a grill, and Troon Golf took over management in 2023. GolfPass Golfers' Choice voters put it No. 6 among Texas courses in 2020.
