About The Golf Club at Texas A&M
This is Texas A&M's on-campus course, rebuilt from the ground up in 2013. The original Campus Course opened in 1951 as a Ralph Plummer design (his other work includes Colonial and Champions) and stayed largely his for 60-plus years. Then Jeff Blume, a 1989 A&M grad, redid it as a $5 million project with Houston businessman Robert Steele and Sterling Golf, which manages it. It's now a par 71 at 7,008 yards.
Blume toured the classic courses of the Northeast and gave it an early American look. The sand is the story: 158 bunkers, four times the old count, many clustered in the style of Charles Macdonald or Donald Ross. More than 200,000 cubic yards of dirt went into raising the greens and fairways, and the map survey shows water on 11 holes and bunkers everywhere, but almost no tree cover. The hole everyone mentions is the 9th, a 404-yard par 4 with Kyle Field right behind the green. The 15th is the longest at 618 yards, and the 17th tempts you to drive over the lake for a wedge in. Many holes play west with campus in the background.
