About Tony Butler Golf Course
Tony Butler is Harlingen's city course, and it's two courses: an 18 of 6,400 yards, par 71, on Champions Ultra-Dwarf Bermuda greens, and a 2,600-yard, par-35 nine with newly redone Emerald Zoysia greens. It meanders through natural South Texas terrain, and the course itself says it's extremely easy to walk, so carry the bag if you like.
The 18 has real history. As the Harlingen Municipal Golf Course, opened in 1929, it hosted the Rio Grande Valley Open, a PGA Tour event in 1949 and 1950. Cary Middlecoff won the first, Jack Burke Jr. the second. John Bredemus built the original nine-hole Harlingen Country Club layout that opened that same year. It's short by modern standards, and the club says it still rewards strategy over power.
The city renamed the course on June 20, 1973, for Tony Butler, a 1931 Texas PGA champion, the first golf coach at the University of Texas, and a man who beat reigning National Open champion Gene Sarazen in a 1933 exhibition. He was known for sometimes playing whole rounds with nothing but a four wood. There's a range, putting and chipping greens, and a kitchen that does breakfast tacos.
