About Champion Lakes Golf Course

Champion Lakes is McAllen's busy public course, rebuilt from the ground up in 1999 by SAJO Construction under architect Charles Howard and reopened in 2000. It's a par 72 that plays 5,779 yards from the middle tees and 6,771 from the back. The fairways are wide and rolling, 419 Bermuda with common Bermuda rough, and mounding in spots gives it a links-style look. Fourteen man-made lakes are what you'll remember.

It gets used. Thirty Winter Texan leagues call it home, the Wednesday Sundowner once drew 1,784 players in a single season, and it hosts the McAllen Amateur and the VAMOS Golf Tournament. It also held all four LPGA Futures Tour stops that came to McAllen.

The practice setup is a big part of the draw. The range is 350 yards long, lit at night, with 11 target greens and tees at both ends so you can hit with the wind, plus a short-game area and a 10,000-square-foot putting green. It's open 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Mondays from 11). The clubhouse restaurant and pro shop are open 364 days a year, closing only on Christmas.

It's one of 13 courses Yoink watches in the Rio Grande Valley & Coastal Bend area, and the closest alternative is Monte Cristo Golf & Country Club, about 8 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
