About Pine Oaks Golf Course
Pine Oaks exists because Johnson City voted for it. In the early 1960s a group of residents pushed for a city-run course so golf wasn't only for private clubs, and after a petition forced the question to a vote, the bonds passed on December 12, 1961, 1,945 to 1,470. A federal urban renewal grant was expected to cover 75% of the $243,000 budget. Alexander G. McKay oversaw construction from spring 1962, and on March 23, 1963 today's back nine opened with $1.50 green fees and $50 yearly passes. The back nine was farmland; the front took longer because houses stood on part of it. All 18 were open by 1964, and it was just Johnson City Municipal until a 1970 contest, won by resident Jack Lewis, named it Pine Oaks.
It's a mountain course, and the course's own tour tells you how it plays: trees line most of the fairways and out of bounds sits behind several greens, so straight beats long. The 7th squeezes you through a chute of pines and then asks for a blind uphill shot to a small green. You aim the blind tee shot on 9 at the radio towers on the mountain, and the 13th drops from a very high tee toward a green with a creek and woods behind it. The course calls the narrow, tree-lined 12th the stereotypical Pine Oaks hole, and it finishes on a par 3 whose green is wide but less than 10 yards deep.
