About Bear Trace Cumberland Mountain
This was the first of the Bear Trace courses Jack Nicklaus designed for Tennessee's state parks, and it made a quick impression: in 1999 Golf Magazine named it one of the Top Ten You Can Play in North America. It sits in Cumberland Mountain State Park, just south of I-40 in Crossville, between Nashville and Knoxville.
Nicklaus built it around the ground he found. The layout works with elevation changes, flowing brooks and clusters of mature pines, and it's a par 72 of 6,928 yards from the Nicklaus tees, with five sets in all. The hole people talk about is the 7th, a 393-yard par 4 where layered flagstone, one of the region's natural resources, runs along the front of the green. Expect the risk-and-reward choices Nicklaus courses are built on, on bentgrass greens and Bermuda fairways.
