Caledonia Golf & Fish Club

Mike Strantz's first solo design, on an old rice plantation: 200-year-old live oaks in Spanish moss, big shaped greens guarded by water, and a famous 18th.

About Caledonia Golf & Fish Club

Caledonia is Mike Strantz's first solo course, opened to the public in January 1994 on what was once one of the biggest rice plantations around Pawleys Island. At its mid-1800s peak the plantation grew more than 700,000 pounds of rice a year. You drive in under an avenue of 200-year-old live oaks hung with Spanish moss, trees that once lined the old King's Highway along the coast.

It's short by modern standards, par 70 and 6,526 yards, but it isn't easy. Strantz worked like an artist, and the greens are big and shaped, guarded by ponds, streams and heavy bunkers, with oaks framing a lot of the shots. The map survey backs that up: water comes into play near 10 holes, with six forced carries, and trees line 16. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data. The famous hole is the 18th, which finishes in view of the Grillroom and the marsh.

The name goes back to Dr. Robert Nesbit, a Scotsman who called the place by the Romans' name for his homeland. His family held it until 1940, the plantation house burned in 1931, and the land was sold off from 2,542 acres to 152. The current owners bought it in 1971 as a hunting and fishing preserve, and their Thursday dinners in a shed that still stands on the property are where the golf course idea came from.
