About Ghost Creek at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club
Pumpkin Ridge has two courses on the same rolling farmland outside North Plains: Witch Hollow, which is private, and Ghost Creek, which anyone can book. Ghost Creek opened first, on April 1, 1992, and Golf Digest named it the best new public course in the country that year. Golf magazine had it fifth among public courses in 1996, and Golf Digest put it 68th on its 2007-08 list of America's public courses.
Bob Cupp laid it out, with John Fought also credited, as a classic old-style design: rolling ground, big bunkers, wetlands at the edges and the creek it's named for winding through and bringing water into play on several holes. The map survey counts water near 11 holes, trees along 15, about 84 bunkers and roughly 127 feet between the high and low points. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data. The 14th made the book Golf's 100 Toughest Holes.
Ghost Creek has held plenty of tournament golf of its own. The Nike Tour Championship came in 1993 and 1994, the finals of the 2000 U.S. Junior Amateur and Girls' Junior were played here, and the LPGA's Safeway Classic was here from 2009 to 2012. Next door on Witch Hollow, 20-year-old Tiger Woods won his third straight U.S. Amateur in 1996.
