Running Y Resort

Arnold Palmer's only Oregon design, one of his Sweet Sixteen. An open, windy front nine by the wetland, then a back nine through pines in Payne Canyon.

About Running Y Resort

Running Y is the only Arnold Palmer design in Oregon, and Palmer put it on his Sweet Sixteen, the short list of his own favorites. He built it with Ed Seay and Erik Larsen, and it opened in 1997 on a 3,600-acre property at the base of the Cascades just outside Klamath Falls. It's a par 72 that stretches to 7,138 yards, with five sets of tees on every hole, so there's no reason to play the tips unless you mean it.

It plays like two courses. The front nine sits in the river basin along the edge of an old wetland: open, exposed to wind off the Klamath Basin, with several forced carries over water. The back nine turns into Payne Canyon, hillier and framed by pines, and the lodge looks down on the 10th fairway. The resort's own tip for No. 6, the No. 1 handicap: it's a long, slightly uphill par 4 between ponderosas, and the green tilts hard left to right, so keep your approach below the hole. Greens are bentgrass, fairways are rye. By OpenStreetMap survey, water touches seven holes and 12 are tree-lined. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.

The property is an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. Expect long rides between some greens and the next tee. There's a double-sided range and two putting and chipping greens, and Howard's on the Greens is the patio bar by the course. Collared shirts for men.

It's one of 11 courses Yoink watches in the Medford, Grants Pass & Klamath area, and the closest alternative is Harbor Links Golf Course, about 5 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
