Salishan is the golf course at Salishan Coastal Lodge, par 71 and just over 6,400 yards from the back, so it's not about length. Every hole has old-growth timber or a seaside bluff beside it. Jacobsen said it was always known as a challenging, fast-playing course, and his job was to keep it that way while making it easier to get around. Developer John Gray started buying the land in 1961. The houses on Salishan Spit came first, then the first nine holes, which are today's back nine, and then the lodge in 1965. Fred Federspiel built the course in the mid-1960s. Oregon's own Peter Jacobsen and his firm, Jacobsen-Hardy Golf Design, restored it in 2004, keeping the layout and opening up views of the ocean.

It has a full practice setup: a full-length range, a putting and chipping green, a practice bunker and a TrackMan simulator for rainy days. Your green fee includes a warm-up bucket, coffee and a course guidebook. Hook and Slice, the bar and grill at the pro shop, is open 9 to 7 every day.

What it's like to play Salishan Golf Links

There's real elevation change: some holes rise or fall about 187 feet from tee to green. 11 of the 18 holes bend, so position off the tee matters more than length. A creek or river runs through the property and comes into play on 5 holes.

Booking a tee time at Salishan Golf Links

You can book any time through the end of the year, and you don't need to stay at the lodge or be a member. Rates move with the day, time, season and how full the lodge is, and there are student and junior rates. You need a credit card to hold a time. Cancel at least 24 hours out, or you'll be charged half the fee. If nothing's open, join the virtual waitlist. The pro shop is (541) 764-1002. Push carts are $16 for 18 holes if you want to walk.
