Ottawa Park Golf Course

Public golf since 1899, host of the first U.S. Amateur Public Links in 1922. Only about 5,000 yards, but tree-lined and full of subtle doglegs.

About Ottawa Park Golf Course

Ottawa Park is where Toledo's public golf started. S.P. Jermain, who built the city's park system, opened a nine-hole course here in 1899 because golf was then a private-club game. The course calls it the oldest public course west of New York City, and the city calls it the second-oldest public course in the country. Harry Vardon is said to have called it the greatest natural public course in the world.

It went to 18 holes in 1920 and 1921 and the next year hosted the very first U.S. Amateur Public Links, the national championship for public-course players. Arthur Hills, the Toledo architect, renovated it in 1977, redoing the greens, tees, bunkers and irrigation, and the greens are still what it's known for.

Don't let the card fool you. It's a par 71 at 5,079 yards, but it's a tree-lined parkland course with plenty of subtle doglegs, so the game is putting the ball on the right side of the fairway, not bombing it. The city dedicated a two-foot bronze statue of Jermain in 1928, and it was stolen at least six times between 1929 and 2006.
