Highland Park Golf Course

Sandy Alves laid it out. Palmer and Nicklaus played the 1964 and 1965 Cleveland Opens here, and Charlie Sifford called it his home course.

About Highland Park Golf Course

Highland Park is the City of Cleveland's 36-hole course, though it sits just outside the city in Highland Hills, a few streets from Canterbury. There are two courses, the Red and the Blue, spread over more than 300 acres of rolling ground with Mill Creek running through several holes. Sandy Alves, Donald Ross's Midwest associate, designed it.

The history is deep. A club of Highland golfers was one of the eight founders of the Northern Ohio Golf Association in 1917. As the only public course near Cleveland's east side, it welcomed Black golfers when most courses didn't: the Sixth City Golf Club (founded 1946) and the Forest City Golf Club made it their home, and Charlie Sifford, the first Black golfer to play and win on the PGA Tour, called it his home course for a time. Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Tony Lema played the PGA Tour's Cleveland Open here in 1964 and 1965, and the first PGA Minority Collegiate event was played here in 1987, with Lee Elder, Sifford, Calvin Peete, Jim Dent and Renee Powell giving free clinics. It has hosted what's now the PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship nine times.

It's in the middle of a comeback. The city handed management to the nonprofit Highland Park Golf Foundation, which brought in Troon for daily operations. A new driving range is open, the Red Course gets a new routing in 2026, and plans call for a Blue Course renovation and an indoor learning center, with early talk of an LPGA event.
