About Hawktree Golf Club
Hawktree is Jim Engh's course in the valley between the Missouri River and US 83, about 15 minutes northeast of Bismarck off Highway 1804. It has a Scottish-links look: native prairie grass along the fairways, big greens, rolling ground and not much else between you and the wind. Burnt Creek, a tributary of the Missouri, is in play on eight holes and there are three lakes, and water is in play on 11 holes. From the back tees it's 7,085 yards and par 72, and there are four sets of tees.
The bunkers are the thing everyone mentions. Engh filled them with black coal slag instead of white sand. It's fine grained like sand, but it doesn't give you the spin you'd get from a normal trap. The hole people talk about is the short par-3 third, where the tee sits 80 feet above the green. The 18th is a long par 5 that ends with a 150-yard approach uphill, which is a lot of golf when the wind is in your face. Only about 80 acres of the property is irrigated turf.
It opened in 2000 and got noticed fast. Golf Digest put it second on its 2000 list of the Best New Affordable Public Courses in America and named it the Best Course in North Dakota in 2001.
