About Hillandale Golf Course
Hillandale is a short, tree-lined par 71 that tops out at 6,339 yards from the back tees and plays down to 4,954 from the forwards, so it's more about position than power. The map survey puts trees along 17 of the 18 holes and water near 10 of them, with about 40 bunkers and only about 33 feet between the high and low points: flat enough to walk, and the rate card has green-fee-only prices if you want to. Course character from OpenStreetMap contributors' survey data.
It's busy. The course says it averages about 56,000 rounds a year and has seen nearly 1.8 million since 1960. It's also where Durham's local golf happens: the Durham Amateur Championship (the 53rd was played June 6 and 7, 2026), the City Golf Classic and a junior invitational, plus First Tee and other youth programs. NC State runs a wetlands restoration program on the property.
The history goes back further than the ground. John Sprunt Hill gave the original course to Durham in 1911; Donald Ross designed the first nine and Perry Maxwell the second. In 1960 the course moved to its current site and George Cobb, the architect of the Surf Club in Myrtle Beach, redesigned it. Durham's sports commission calls it the oldest public golf facility in the area.
