About Duke University Golf Club
Duke's course was a long time coming. The school looked at a course in the early 1930s, and Perry Maxwell drew plans in 1941 on the site where the Faculty Club now sits, but Pearl Harbor put them on hold. After the war Duke picked the current 120 acres for their elevation changes, with rolling Piedmont ground, streams, hardwoods and tall pines, and hired Robert Trent Jones Sr. It opened to the public on September 26, 1957.
It drew the 1962 men's NCAA finals, and one of the players in that field, from Yale, was Rees Jones, the designer's son. Rees came back three decades later: by the late 1980s the course was worn out, and in a project finished between June 1993 and April 1994 he re-grassed the landing areas and redesigned every tee and green complex. The NCAA men's finals came back in 2001.
The back nine has a stretch the club calls Duke's own "Amen Corner," and the par 3 in the middle of it plays to a peninsula green from the back tees.
