Sugar Mountain Golf Course

About Sugar Mountain Golf Course

Sugar Mountain is the village's own course, an 18-hole par 64 on 60 acres near Boone, Banner Elk and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Frank Duane designed it; he spent more than two decades as Robert Trent Jones's senior project manager. It opened in 1974. The card is nine par 3s, eight par 4s and a single par 5, so it's short, and the irons get most of the work.

It sits at about 4,000 feet, which is the point in July: the village says summer highs rarely get past 80 degrees, though showers can pop up fast, so keep a rain jacket in the bag. The holes play past mountain brooks, rhododendron and forest.

Each August the course hosts the Sugar Mountain Golf Classic Amateur Championship; in 2026 it's August 15 and 16.

It's one of 7 courses Yoink watches in the Boone, Linville & the High Country area, and the closest alternative is Linville Land Harbor Golf Course, about 4 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
