Mountain Glen Golf Club

George Cobb's 1960s layout on an old dairy farm, never changed. The front nine is flat and open; the back climbs to Cranberry Draw and the uphill 11th.

About Mountain Glen Golf Club

Mountain Glen started with a local idea in the spring of 1961: an affordable course for Avery County. The Avery Development Corporation formed that June, pieced together land that included a 400-acre dairy farm, and hired George W. Cobb, the architect behind the Par 3 Course at Augusta National and Quail Hollow in Charlotte. The first nine opened on July 4, 1964 and the second on May 29, 1965.

The club says the course has never had to be changed since Cobb built it, and the two nines play like different courses. The front is links-style, with relatively flat, open fairways and small bentgrass greens. The back nine works its way up into what locals used to call Cranberry Draw. The 11th, an uphill dogleg left, was once rated among the best par 4s in Western North Carolina, and 14 through 18 bring you back down to the clubhouse.

Don't let the flat start fool you. From the blue tees it's rated 71.3 with a 138 slope, and it drops to 69.3 and 126 from the whites, which is the better fit for most.

It's one of 7 courses Yoink watches in the Boone, Linville & the High Country area, and the closest alternative is Linville Land Harbor Golf Course, about 3 miles away — handy when your first choice is booked solid.
