About Grover Cleveland Golf Course - Grover Cleveland
This is the old Country Club of Buffalo, which played here from 1902 to 1925, and for a county green fee you can walk the fairways of a U.S. Open. Club member Ganson Depew laid it out. Walter Travis's input got it the 1912 Open, which the defending champion, John McDermott, won. Donald Ross redesigned it in 1917-18, and Erie County says no other public course in North America carries the work of both men.
The club sold to the City of Buffalo in 1925, which renamed it for Grover Cleveland, the former Buffalo mayor and president. In 1947 the city gave 16 1/2 acres to the federal government for a veterans hospital. Three holes and part of a fourth went with it, and the 7th, 15th and 16th were built to replace them. Erie County bought the park in 1982 for $1.00. Nine of the 1912 holes are still in play: the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 12th and 13th.
It's short, 5,621 yards and par 69 from the whites, but the greens do the defending. The county calls the Ross complexes very difficult, especially on 3, 14, 17 and 18, and the 17th is a Redan-style par 3 that it says is rated one of the best par 3s in Western New York every year. Fescue rough, restored to frame the fairways, and bunkers rebuilt toward the Travis and Ross originals give it a British Isles look.
